Matanah 5 – Parshas Toldos – Parshas Bechukosai – Lech Lecha – Mishpat – Tzedakah – Avraham Avinu – Yitzchak Avinu Prayed for Rivka – Yaakov Avinu – Kabbalah Basics – Tefilah Is a Double-Edged Sword – Yishmael and Esav in Tefilah – Speaker: Rabbi Nasan Maimon.
Hilkhos Matanah 5 is based on Likutey Moharan 22.
00:00 – PARAGRAPH 37b. Chesed – Avraham Avinu. Gevurah – Yitzchak Avinu. Esav acted with excessive Mishpat.
02:00 – כִּי־שָׁמַע יְהוָה אֶל־עָנְיֵךְ – “…for HaShem has heard your affliction” (Bereishis 16:11, Lech Lecha).
06:30 – Ultimate tefilah is bitul. Definition of bitul.
07:30 – Esav was ruled by excessive Mishpat. “Tov meod is the Malakh HaMavess” [“Too good is no good”].
09:20 – Reference to Ehven HaEzer, Hilkhos Gitten.
10:10 – PARAGRAPH 38. Overemphasis on Mishpat can turn a person away from Torah and mitzvos – may HaShem protect.
16:00 – Wanting to be too strict in Torah observance can eventually lead a person to do evil, as in: אַל־תְּהִי צַדִּיק הַרְבֵּה וְאַל־תִּתְחַכַּם יוֹתֵר לָמָּה תִּשּׁוֹמֵם – “Do not be overly righteous, nor overly wise; why should you bring desolation upon yourself?” (Koheles 7:16).
19:00 – Reference to 2Likutey Moharan 78.
23:10 – Q&R about Yishmael’s connection with Chesed.
24:00 – ***NOTE: Reference to Likutey Moharan 2: Tefilah is compared to a double-edged sword. Right and left in tefilah are compared to Yishmael (over-reliance on HaShem’s Chesed) and Esav (excessive Gevurah). A sword is not effective if it strikes too far to the right or too far to the left.
26:00 – PARAGRAPH 39. The components of Rachamim. Brief explanation of how the midos are relative. [Course on “Kabbalah Basics”.]
29:20 – ***Parshas Toldos. וַיֶּעְתַּר יִצְחָק לַיהוָה לְנֹכַח אִשְׁתּוֹ – “And Yitzchak prayed intensely to HaShem opposite his wife…” (Bereishis 25:21, Toldos). Yitzchak Avinu davened with Gevurah for Rivka.
33:40 – PARAGRAPH 40. Reference to the Alshich HaKodesh on Eicha: The 70 Nations are divided into 2 groups of 35 nations each. One groups is led by Yishmael and the other by Esav.
37:00 – ***Parshas Bechukosai. וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת־בְּרִיתִי יַעֲקוֹב וְאַף אֶת־בְּרִיתִי יִצְחָק וְאַף אֶת־בְּרִיתִי אַבְרָהָם אֶזְכֹּר – “And I will remember My covenant [with] Yaakov, and also My covenant [with] Yitzchak, and also My covenant [with] Avraham I will remember…” (Vayikra 26:42, Bechukosai). The Third Beis HaMikdash will be established forever, because it is an aspect of Yaakov Avinu’s perfect balance of Mishpat and Tzedakah – this balance is the essence of Emes.
39:00 – When Moshiach is revealed, Yitzchak will become Yischak – Gevurah will become sweetened. This will bring about the Final Geulah.
41:00 – Remembrance is connected with kindness and pity.
46:00 – Maamar from the Zohar HaKodesh before Tokias HaShofar.
47:30 – NOTE: heard from Rabbi Rosenfeld zal about the letters of the word שופר: The shofar is gevurah – reference to Likutey Moharan 5. Pey Reish – The five closing letters of the Aleph-Beis are related to Gevurah – Din. Shin – Vav – 306 – relates to Chesed. Through tokias hashofar, HaShem’s Din is sweetened by Chesed.
50:45 – Closing blessings.
