Hishtapkhus - Outpouring of the Soul / תפילה - השתפכות הנפש

Hishtapkhus HaNefesh (Outpouring of the Soul) is a collection of Rabbi Nachman’s teachings about Hisbodedus – literally “seclusion” – voluntary prayer in one’s own words in addition to strengthen, enrich, and empower the individual’s emotional connection to the traditional mandatory prayers from the siddur (Jewish prayer book). The text is translated into and explained in English by Rabbi Nasan Maimon.

The sefer was compiled by Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Bezhilianski (known as Reb Alter of Teplik) and first published in Jerusalem about 1904. Reb Alter was born in Teplik, Ukraine, and was the son-in-law of one of Rav Nosson of Nemirov’s closest students, Reb Nachman Chazan. He became a leading teacher of Breslov chassidus throughout Europe and Russia by writing, publishing, and distributing a number of works about the teachings of Rabbi Nachman.

In the words of Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan z”l: “[Outpouring of the Soul] provides a path through which even the most unlearned Jew can find his way back to God.”
