Giluach 1 – Giluach 2 – Introduction – Prohibition of Shaving the Beard and Peyos; Holy Aging; Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Rosen ז”ל. Speaker: Rabbi Nasan Maimon.

Hilkhos Giluach 1 is based on Likutey Moharan 30, which Rebbe Nachman taught on Shabbos Chanukah.

*00:00 – This shiur was given on the 20th of Kislev, the yahrzeit of Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim b’Reb Klonimus Kalman Rosen (1899-1984). Rabbi Maimon shares biographical notes about the life of this accomplished and dedicated Torah scholar, co-founder of the Central Breslov Yeshiva in Meah Shaarim, and revered elder in the Breslov community.
07:10 – HALAKHA 1. The prohibition of shaving the beard and peyos. Ekev is twice Peya. Avraham Avinu did not cut his peyos in order to distinguish himself from rest of the world.
13:14 – The hair of the face and head is an aspect of chokhma tata – the lower level of the intellect – also called מלכות.
14:20 – Malkhus has no light of its own. It has to receive from chokhma. For this reason, each of the three Avos contributed some of their years so that Dovid HaMelech could live.
16:00 – אֵ֚לֶּה מֽוֹעֲדֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה – “These are Hashem’s appointed [holy days]…” (Vayikra 23:4, Emor).
17:36 – Arba Malchios of the Sitra Achra are the four exiles. Malkhus.
19:00 – Hashem will establish His Throne through chessed. When Hashem loves someone, He rebukes them. Rebuke is a revelation of chessed.
19:53 – Prohibition of shaving the beard and peyos. The beard and peyos are the hadras ponim of a Jew, as in מִפְּנֵ֤י שֵׂיבָה֙ תָּק֔וּם וְהָֽדַרְתָּ֖ פְּנֵ֣י זָקֵ֑ן – “You shall rise before a venerable person and you shall respect the elderly” (Vayikra 19:32, Kedoshim).
20:58 – חָכְמַ֤ת אָדָם֙ תָּאִ֣יר פָּנָ֔י ו“…a man’s wisdom illuminates his face…” (Koheles 8:1). The Thirteen Attributes of Kindness are related to the beard. Reference to Likutey Moharan 2 and Likutey Moharan 27.
21:50 – Hairs are pipelines. The Hebrew word for hair – שיער – is related to the word for “measure” – שיעור.
25:40 – The prohibition of cutting stones for an altar with a metal tool.
27:52 – The two peyos (right and left) and the beard (center) correspond to the three major holidays and the three Avos.
28:26 – Meaning of “the Light of Hashem’s Face”.
28:44 – Miracles increase fear of Hashem. Avraham Avinu is the “right side” – chessed, Yitzchak Avinu is the “left side” – gevurah, Yaakov Avinu is “center” – tiferes.
*32:21 – Q&R about animal sacrifices in the Beis HaMikdash. The difference between the life of an animal and the life of a human being.
33:26 – Q&R about the halakha of shaving the beard and peyos.
35:30 – BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE about Rabbi Zvi Aryeh Rosenfeld ז”ל to illustrate how a tzaddik sometimes disguises himself.
41:00 – Back into the text: cutting all the other hair of the head is permitted and spiritually beneficial.
44:21 – HALAKHA 2. INTRODUCTION. Hilkhos Giluach 2 is based on 2Likutey Moharan 4. When Hashem reveals His ratzon – will – in a way that contradicts the rules of nature, man respects and fears Him.
48:29 – Metzach haratzon and “holy aging”.
*51:22 – Holy aging means becoming ever kinder and more productive as life continues, as opposed to falling into קְצַ֥ר יָ֜מִ֗ים וּֽשְׂבַ֣ע־רֹֽגֶז – “…short of days and full of fear” (Iyov 14:1).
52:57 – Closing blessings.
