VaYakhel 5774 (Clip) – The Humility of Betzalel and Oholiav

VaYakhel – The Humility of Betzalel and Oholiav – Speaker: Rabbi Nasan Maimon. Based on Likutey Halakhos, Orach Chaim 3, Hilkhos Shabbos 3.

Betzalel and Oholiav merited to be Moshe Rabbeinu’s “two hands” because each was skilled yet humble. וְעָשָׂה֩ בְצַלְאֵ֨ל וְאָֽהֳלִיאָ֜ב וְכֹ֣ל | אִ֣ישׁ חֲכַם־לֵ֗ב אֲשֶׁר֩ נָתַ֨ן יְהֹוָ֜ה חָכְמָ֤ה וּתְבוּנָה֙ בָּהֵ֔מָּה לָדַ֣עַת לַֽעֲשׂ֔ת אֶת־כָּל־מְלֶ֖אכֶת עֲבֹדַ֣ת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ – “Bezalel and Oholiav and every wise-hearted man into whom God had imbued wisdom and insight to know how to do, shall do all the work of the holy service…” (Shemos 36:1-2, VaYakhel).

01:03 – Man is on a higher level of intellect than animals are, but a person who’s truly wise allows himself to be led by HaShem like a beheyma (בה מה – “it contains all it is”). By making his intellect subservient to the Torah, a person becomes worthy of HaShem’s rescue (Chulin 5). וַֽאֲנִי־בַ֖עַר וְלֹ֣א אֵדָ֑ע בְּ֜הֵמ֗וֹת הָיִ֥יתִי עִמָּֽךְ – “But I was brutish and I did not know; I was [as] an animal with You…” (Tehillim 73:22). HaShem rewarded this quality of subservience in Betzalel and Oholiav by entrusting them with creating the vessels of the Mishkan.

04:31 – The importance of praying for reliable guidance and true leadership.
