2022-10-26 – LH 4 – YD1 – Ribis 5 – Para. 12-13 – Judgement on Rosh Hashanah “Like Sheep”; אין עוד מלבדו – There is Nothing But Hashem

Likutey Halakhos, Yoreh Deah 1, Ribis 5, Para. 12-13. Judgement on Rosh Hashanah “Like Sheep”; אין עוד מלבדו – Ain Od Milvado – There is Nothing But Hashem. Speaker: Rabbi Nasan Maimon.
Hilkhos Ribis 5 is based on Likutey Moharan 51.
00:00 – On Rosh Hashanah all the inhabitants of the world are examined by Hashem like sheep, one by one (Rosh Hashanah 1:2). Yet, Hashem doesn’t need to judge individually, since He doesn’t need time to process information as people do. So why does the gemara describe this one-by-one process?
05:46 – Hashem’s justice is always truthful. אֱמֶת֙ וּמִשְׁפַּ֣ט שָׁל֔וֹם שִׁפְט֖וּ בְּשַֽׁעֲרֵיכֶֽם – “…truth, and judgment of peace you shall judge in your cities” (Zecharia 8:16).
06:00 – עַל שְׁלֹשָׁה דְבָרִים הָעוֹלָם קַיָּם: עַל הַדִּין, וְעַל הָאֱמֶת, וְעַל הַשָּׁלוֹם – “Three things sustain the world: law, truth, and peace” (Pirkei Avos 1:17).
7:12 – By performing mitzvos we become part of Hashem. The word mitzvah in gematria Atbash is Y – K – V – K. Through speaking truth, a person draws Hashem’s supervision upon him.
10:15 – Reference to Likutey Moharan 13 and the concepts of “before creation” and “after creation”. The ultimate purpose of man is to connect with the perfected spiritual level of “before creation”.
12:30 – NOTE on spiritual principles that can be understood through observing the process of purifying metal.
15:18 – “Don’t do a lot of evil” – a person should not think “I’m already doing something bad, so I may as well do something even worse.” Reference to Likutey Moharan 51 “No eye has ever seen…” (Yuma 21).
19:40 – Answer to the question posed at beginning of shiur: why are people judged one by one, as sheep?
21:25 – Hashem judges each and every person individually according to their unique abilities
27:00 – Q&R about the soul returning to its Source. If all merges to purity, how can there be judgement for good and evil?
28:48 – Q&R about the soul being in a constant state of creation.
29:51 – Q&R about judgement on Rosh Hashanah.
32:53 – PARAGRAPH 13. On Rosh Hashanah a person is assigned his unique mission in the world throughout the new year. To succeed in this mission, a person needs faith in Hashem’s direct supervision.
40:00 – No one can “run away” from Hashem. פְּלִ֣יאָה (כתיב פְּלִ֣אָיה) דַ֣עַת מִמֶּ֑נִּי נִ֜שְׂגְּבָ֗ה לֹֽא־אוּכַ֥ל לָֽהּ – “Knowledge is hidden from me; it is hard, I cannot attain it” – אָנָ֣ה אֵלֵךְ מֵֽרוּחֶ֑ךָ וְ֜אָ֗נָה מִפָּנֶ֥יךָ אֶבְרָֽח – “Where shall I go from Your spirit, and where shall I flee from Your presence?” (Tehillim 139:6-7). אין עוד מלבדו – there is nothing but Hashem.
41:00 – אִם־אֶסַּ֣ק שָׁ֖מַיִם שָׁ֣ם אָ֑תָּה וְאַצִּ֖יעָה שְּׁא֣וֹל הִנֶּֽךָּ – “If I ascend to the heavens, there You are, and if I make my bed in the grave, behold, You are there” (Tehillim 139:8-10).
43:00 – בְּֽכָל־מָ֖קוֹם עֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה צֹ֜פ֗וֹת רָעִ֥ים וְטוֹבִֽים – “The eyes of Hashem are everywhere, viewing the evil and the good” (Mishlei 15:3).
43:50 – The perfection of faith is achieved through connection with tzaddikim.
54:00 – “Panei Hashem” – the Face [of Hashem] refers to His השגחה – supervision.
56:00 – אין עוד מלבדו – It’s impossible to “run away from” Hashem. עֵינֵ֨י יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ בָּ֔הּ מֵֽרֵשִׁית֙ הַשָּׁנָ֔ה וְעַ֖ד אַֽחֲרִ֥ית שָׁנָֽה – “The Eyes of Hashem are always upon [Eretz Yisrael], from the beginning of the year to the end of the year” (Devarim 11:12; Rosh Hashanah 8).
59:09 – Q&R about “before and after creation”.
59:30 – Q&R about atheists and the impossibility of “running away from Hashem”.
